Refractive Error Pattern of Children in South-South Nigeria: A Tertiary Hospital Study
The purpose of this study was to determine the pattern of refractive errors among children in Bayelsa State, South-South Nigeria.
This was retrospective review of all the children (4 – 15 years) who were refracted at the eye clinic of the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital.
Refractive error was present in 114 children consisting of 72 (63.2%) females and 42 (36.8%) males.
The most common refractive error was myopia presenting 61.4% of cases.
The prevalence of myopia, astigmatism and hyperopia were 13.8%, 6.1% and 2.6% respectively.
Refractive error was common in children with myopia as the most common type and more prevalent in females.
