Enabling Vision and Empowering Athletes: The OneSight EssilorLuxottica Foundation at the Special Olympics World Games

The Special Olympics World Games in Berlin brought together 7,000 athletes with disabilities from 170 nations, creating an inclusive sporting extravaganza like no other.

The OneSight EssilorLuxottica Foundation is honored to have had the opportunity to enhance the athletes' experiences through the Special Olympics Lions Club International ‘Opening Eyes’ program in 2023, providing vision care and support to athletes before participating in the games. Inclusive health remains at the forefront of the Foundation’s efforts, having been a partner of the Special Olympics for over 20 years. The Special Olympics is the world's largest sports movement for individuals with intellectual and multiple disabilities. As an organization recognized by the International Olympic Committee, it empowers athletes to showcase their talents on a global stage.
Clear Vision, Clear Pathways
Through the ‘Opening Eyes’ program, the Foundation offered athletes a qualified examination of their vision. For many participants, this was their very first eye exam, highlighting the alarming lack of access to vision care in their lives. Detecting and correcting vision defects, such as nearsightedness or astigmatism, opened up a world of possibilities for these athletes, ensuring they could see well and perform at their best.

EssilorLuxottica’s dedicated employees, including over 100 volunteers who convened in Berlin from across the region, contributed their time and expertise to conduct these examinations. As a result of their efforts, 2,965 athletes were screened and 1,363 of them received a pair of glasses. Their unwavering commitment to making a difference exemplifies the core values of the Foundation and the spirit of compassion that drives our work.

With improved vision through glasses provided by the Foundation, athletes gained the confidence and clarity necessary to pursue their dreams, both on and off the field.

The Special Olympics World Games in Berlin marked a milestone in promoting inclusivity, empowerment, and equal opportunities for athletes with disabilities.
We are thrilled to have played a pivotal role in enhancing the athletes' experiences and ensuring their success in this global celebration of talent, resilience, and unity.
Together, we can continue to break down barriers and empower individuals to see more and be more.
