A Population-Based Cross-Sectional Study of Barriers to Uptake of Eye Care Services in South India: The Rapid Assessment of Visual Impairment Project

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the barriers to uptake of eye care services among adult people with avoidable impairment in the South Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.

  • This was a cross-sectional study and 7,800 participants were selected through two-stage cluster random sampling methodology.

  • The leading barrier to uptake eye care services was ‘lack of perceived need’ for reasons such as old age and good vision in the other eye.

  • Person-related barriers are more common than service-related barriers in Andhra Pradesh, therefore relevant awareness programs need to be developed.
