Impact of Eye Exams in Identifying Chronic Conditions

  • This study was performed by Optum, the nation’s leading health services company, on behalf of UnitedHealthcare to illustrate the prevalence of chronic disease identified through comprehensive eye exams by eye care practitioners (ECPs).

  • The approach taken in this study attempts to remove external factors and better isolate the impact of comprehensive eye exams on chronic condition identification.

  • More than 4,000 cases of chronic conditions were identified by an ECP.

  • Multiple sclerosis, diabetes, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn’s disease had the highest percentage of identification by ECP
