Prevalence of Refractive Error Among Schoolchildren in the Cape Coast Municipality, Ghana
The purpose of this study was to determine the magnitude of refractive errors among school children in the Cape Coast Municipality of Ghana.
This was a school based cross-sectional study conducted on 1103 school children in the Cape Coast Municipality of Ghana.
The prevalence of low vision and blindness in the study population was 0.9% and 0.1% respectively.
The commonest refractive error was astigmatism accounting for 55% followed by myopia and hyperopia with 27% and 18% respectively.
Uncorrected refractive error is a common cause of visual impairment among school children and the uptake of eye care in the municipality.
