Prevalence of Refractive Error Among Schoolchildren in the Cape Coast Municipality, Ghana

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the magnitude of refractive errors among school children in the Cape Coast Municipality of Ghana.

  • This was a school based cross-sectional study conducted on 1103 school children in the Cape Coast Municipality of Ghana.

  • The prevalence of low vision and blindness in the study population was 0.9% and 0.1% respectively.

  • The commonest refractive error was astigmatism accounting for 55% followed by myopia and hyperopia with 27% and 18% respectively.

  • Uncorrected refractive error is a common cause of visual impairment among school children and the uptake of eye care in the municipality.
