Prevalence of Refractive Errors in School-Age Children in Morocco
The purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence of refractive errors in school-age children in Morocco.
This was a cross-sectional study conducted with 545 children aged 6 to 16 years.
Only 6.1% of the children registered a myopic refractive error in at least one eye.
The prevalence of bilateral myopia was 3.1%.
The prevalence of hyperopia was 18.3%.
Bilateral hyperopia was present in the 11.7% of the total children.
The study found 23.5% of children presented astigmatism in at least one eye.
Bilateral astigmatism was present in 9.7% of the children.
Anisometropia was present in 2.9% of children.
There was a low prevalence of myopia in these African children, astigmatism being the most frequent refractive error.
