Prevalence of Vision Impairment in Older Adults in Rural China

  • The purpose of this study was to provide a descriptive analysis for the prevalence of visual impairment and blindness among older adults in rural populations in China.

  • A cluster sampling method was used to select 45 747 ≥50 years’ adults within nine provinces of mainland China.

  • There is a strong link between visual impairment/blindness and old age, likewise female gender, lack of education, and geographical location.

  • Visual impairment and blindness are critical public health problems in rural China, thus recommend for these to be considered in public health policy and development programs.
