Refractive Errors in a Rural Chinese Adult Population: The Handan Eye Study

  • The aim of the study was to provide a description for the prevalence of and risk factors for myopia and other refractive errors in a rural adult Chinese population.

  • The study used a clustered, random sampling method to randomly select 7,557 Chinese people 30 years old from Handan, China for investigation.

  • High school or higher education, diabetes, nuclear opacity and number of family members with myopia were risk factors in people 50 years of age.

  • The study shows that myopia affects more than one quarter of rural Chinese people who are 30 years old.
