Safety of Spectacles for Children's Vision: A Cluster-Randomized Controlled Trial

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the safety of children’s glasses in rural China.

  • The study was based on exploratory analysis from a cluster-randomized, investigator-masked, controlled trial.

  • Children from 252 randomly selected primary schools in western China were studied.

  • Final visual acuity for eyes of children in the treatment groups (Free Glasses and Voucher) was better than for Control children.

  • No indication that spectacles promote decline in uncorrected vision with aging among children.
