The Relationship Between Moderate Hyperopia and Academic Achievement: How Much Plus Is Enough?
The purpose of this study was to assess relationship between moderate hyperopia and academic achievement.
This was a population-based cross-sectional study with 1 000 children randomly selected by school personnel from first-through-fifth grade.
The refractive status and achievement test scores of 782 first-through-fifth grade children were compared.
33% of the myopic children were high scores, as compared with only 13% of the hyperopic children.
The difference was not so high among the low scoring group, which contained 10% of the myopic children, as compared with 14% of the hyperopic children.
The difference between myopic and hyperopic children is significant (X2 = 5.64; df = 1; p = 017).
There is a strong correlation between hyperopia and academic underachievement.
