Vision Screening Requirements for School-age Children during the COVID-19 Pandemic
With in-person instruction suspended during the pandemic, health screening programs, including vision screenings did not occur. School closures and modified schedules for in-person learning continued into the 2020-2021 academic year with resultant continued impact on school-based vision screenings. This study aims to report how states modified their vision screening requirements for school-aged during the 2020-2021 academic cycle.
As of March 2021, 16 states had publicly available information from their state Department of Health or Education about VS requirements for the 2021 academic year. A total of 11 states modified and 5 waived/suspended VS. The remaining 24 states have no COVID-19 specific information publicly available.
